Auckland Open Tennis Championship 2016 - the 48th draw of the annual professional tennis tournament for men and the 31st in women held in the New Zealand city ​​of Auckland and is part of the ATP Tour within the ATP series of 250 men and part of the WTA Tour in the international category of tournaments among women.

In 2016, the tournament was held from 4 to 9 January for women and 11 to 16 January. The competition was part of the preparatory series of tournaments for the Australian Open .

General Information

The first sowing number in the men's singles tournament was David Ferrer (No. 7 in the world at the time), and the second one was another representative of the Top 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . Last year's champion Jiri Vesely defended his title, but already in the first round, Roberto Bautiste Agutu lost to the eighth sowing number. Ferrer and Tsonga in turn were able to reach where the semi-finals, where both completed the performance. The Spaniard lost to Jack Soku , and the Frenchman Bautista Agutu. In the decisive match of Bautista, Agut was able to beat Sok and win the main prize.

The first sowing number in the women's single tournament was his last year's winner Venus Williams (No. 7 in the world). The American left already in the first round, losing to Russia's representative Daria Kasatkina . As a result, another tennis player from the United States, Sloan Stevens , who was sown as number five, won the tournament. In the final, she beat German Julia Görges .

In the men's doubles last year's champions Raven Klasen and Leander Paez did not defend their title. The victory was won by an unsealed couple, Michael Venus and Mate Pavic . In the final, they beat the fourth seeding numbers of Eric Butorak and Scott Lipsky . Thus, Venus became the first representative of New Zealand since 2010, who won the home tournament in any of the categories for men and women.

The pair prize for women went to a duet from Belgium Eliza Mertens and An-Sophie Places . They beat Danku Kovinich and Barbor Strytsov in the decisive match. Last year's tournament winners Robert Vinci and Sara Errani did not defend the title.
