Biography and Creativity

Very little information has been preserved about the life of Jacques Selye. Neither the date nor the place of his birth are known; it is believed that he died in 1620 in Reims . In the recordings made by Selye himself, he was said to be the organist of the cathedral in Lana , then in Reims , and in addition, he made a living raising children [3] .

Mellange manuscript page, curiosités et petites inventions ...

Three manuscripts illustrated by Selye have survived to this day. The first author, entitled “Recherche de plusieurs singularités” (“Collection of some wonders”) is Francois Merlin, a Renaissance scholar who served in the court of Princess Maria Elizabeth [4] . It was created from 1583 to 1587 and then was presented as a gift to King Henry III [5] . The manuscript contains numerous drawings on various topics from the field of science and art (including sketches of musical instruments), samples of calligraphy, foreign alphabets, etc. It is currently stored in the National Library of France [6] .

The second, entitled "Mellange, curiosités et petites inventions de Jacques Cellier ..." ("All sorts of things, curiosities and inventions of Jacques Selye ..."), is stored in the Paris Library of Saint Genevieve . It contains the prayer “ Our Father ” translated into 27 languages and pen drawings [7] .

It also contains a translation of “Our Father” into 26 languages, and, in addition, a variety of calligraphy samples and musical notes [8] .

In 1618, Jacques Selye created a detailed plan of the city of Reims and its monuments [9] . In addition, thanks to one of his sketches in the manuscript “Recherche de plusieurs singularités”, information has come down to us about the unreserved floor labyrinth of the Reims Cathedral , containing the names of the first architects who built the cathedral in the 13th century.
