Dimitrov, Ivan

Ivan Milanov Dimitrov (May 14, 1935 - January 1, 2019) is a Bulgarian football player who played as a defender. Best known for playing for Lokomotiv Sofia and the Bulgarian national team [3] .

Biography

Ivan Dimitrov was born on May 14, 1935. He started playing football at the club " Academic Sofia ". Then he alternately played for the Sofia “Builder” and “Torpedo”. In the capital “Locomotive” came from the team “Plant 12”.

He spent his first match in the Premier League with the “railwaymen” on May 30, 1956 and played in the team until June 1965, having spent ten seasons in the club. During this time, he played 215 matches for Lokomotiv and scored two goals. From 1960 and before leaving the team he was the captain of Lokomotiv. In the status of captain in 1964, together with Lokomotiv, he won the Bulgarian title; it was also the second time two times and the third time.

In the second half of 1965 he moved to Spartak Sofia . With this team in 1968 he became the owner of the Cup of the Soviet Army (national cup). In the spring of 1969 he moved to the metropolitan Academician, where he played until April 1971. In total, he played 340 matches in the Bulgarian Championship.

From 1957 to 1970 he played 70 matches in the national team of Bulgaria, in nine he was its captain. Participant in the qualifying and final tournaments of the world championships of 1962 in Chile and 1970 in Mexico [4] [5] . He also participated in a football tournament at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Italy . Dimitrov was close to entering the European Championship in 1968 , but in the playoffs Bulgaria 3-4 lost to Italy.

Dimitrov also played four matches in the second team, two in the youth (one as captain) and four in the youth team (three with the captain's armband).

The holder of the title "Honored Master of Sports". By profession - civil engineer.

Ivan Dimitrov died on January 1, 2019 at the age of 83 years [6] .
