History

According to Articles 10 and 11 of the Act on the Election of Members (Deputies) of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage in 1976, the elections of the new convocation of the European Parliament must take place five years after the elections of the current convocation. Throughout the EU, elections must be held in the same week, but member states themselves determine a specific voting date from Thursday to Sunday. The states in which the voting took place earlier, during the election period, than in other states, are not entitled to publish the results of the will of their citizens until the polling stations are closed throughout the European Union [2] .

At the elections to the European Parliament (European Parliament), 751 deputies will be elected, who will represent more than 512 million Europeans, which will make these elections the largest transnational elections in the history of the world. Both national parties (including parties that are members of European parties ) and independent candidates will participate in the elections. In February 2018, the European Parliament decided to reduce the number of European deputies to 705 if the UK leaves the EU on March 29, 2019. However, due to the fact that the release date of the UK was postponed, the UK should take part in the elections, and the number of deputies remains the same - 751.

At the same time, parliamentary elections in Belgium , a constitutional referendum in Ireland , local elections in Italy and Germany (land (regional) in Bremen), regional elections in Spain, and the 2nd round of the presidential election in Lithuania will be held.
