Rattan Lal (born in Punjab , India, now Pakistan) is an American soil scientist of Indian origin. Distinguished University Professor at Ohio State University, Fell India (1998) and TWAS (1992). Laureate of the Japan Prize (2019). His work focuses on the potential of soils to help resolve global issues such as climate change, food security and water quality.

Biography
Indian. In 1948, when he was five years old, his family fled from Pakistan to India. He graduated from (Bachelor of Agriculture, 1963). In 1965 he received a master's degree in soil at the , and in 1968 he received a Ph.D. in soil from Ohio State University (USA), and was admitted to Sigma Xi the same year. In 1968-69 Research Fell University of Sydney (Australia). From 1970 to 1987 he worked at the (Ibadan, Nigeria), until 1984 as a specialist in soil physics. Since 1987 at Ohio State University: originally an associate professor, since 1989 a professor, and since 2011 a distinguished university professor. In 2000, he founded the CMSC (Carbon Management and Sequestration Center), which is now its director. Also since 2009, a professor at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik. Fello American Association for the Advancement of Science (1996). Honorary Member of ISSS (2012). Prepared many students.

He has published more than 2 thousand works, including 22 books. Its h-index is > 100. The author of works covering topics from soil ecosystems and the effects of tillage systems to global food security and carbon sequestration in the soil.
