Biography
Valery Abramovich (Arkadevich) Volkhovsky was born on December 16, 1938 in Nikolaev of the Ukrainian SSR into a theatrical family. Mother was an actress, father - an artist of a puppet theater.
In 1958 he played in the Crimean Puppet Theater in Simferopol. In 1964 he graduated from the Puppet Theater Actor department of the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography (LGITMiK; course of M. M. Korolyov ). In 1970 he graduated from the Higher Director's Courses in Moscow.
In 1964-1965 he worked in the Tambov Puppet Theater. In 1965-1966 he served in the Kharkov Puppet Theater .
In 1966-1972 he was the main director of the Belgorod Puppet Theater , in 1972-1975 - the Oryol Puppet Theater, and in 1975-1977 - the Bryansk Puppet Theater. In 1977-1987 - the main director of the Chelyabinsk Puppet Theater .
Since 1987, he was the artistic director of the Voronezh Puppet Theater "Jester" . He participated in numerous international festivals. He toured in France, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary.
In 1998-2002, he was president of the Russian Center of the International Association of Puppet Theater Figures (UNIMA).
He died on September 19, 2003 in Voronezh.
Awards and Prizes
- State Prize of the RSFSR named after K. S. Stanislavsky (1985) - for the performances “Career of Arthur Wu, which could not have been” by B. Brecht, “Dead Souls” by N. V. Gogol, “Stork and Scarecrow” by L. Lopeiskaya and G. Kurchulova, staged at the Chelyabinsk OTK.
- Honored Artist of the RSFSR (12/22/1986).
- People's Artist of Russia (01/11/1994) [1] .
- 1998 State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of literature and art for works for children and youth "For children's performances of the Voronezh State Puppet Theater" (1998).
- Winner of the Golden Fund of the Voronezh Region Award (2002) and the regional theater competition “Event of the Season” (1995, 1996).

- In September 2004, a memorial plaque dedicated to Volkhovsky was opened on the building of the Voronezh Puppet Theater.
- In 2006, the Chelyabinsk Puppet Theater was named after Valery Volkhovsky.
