Biography

Born November 5, 1946 in the village of Kumtai, Golaghat County, Indian state of Assam [1] .

Barua began his film career in the mid-1970s, initially playing a mandolin to record background music in the film Mamata (1973) [2] , then as an assistant director in the film Faguni [1] [3] . After that, he worked as a screenwriter and assistant director for Shiva Prasad Thakur's films such as Bowari (1982), Ghar Sangsar (1983), Son Moina (1984) and Mon Mandir (1985) [2] . In all, he wrote scripts for at least 21 films [4] , including Ek Desh Mor Desf (1986), Bhai Bhai (1988) Biju Phukan and Sewarli (1989) [2] .

As a director, he made his debut in the 1987 Pratima film, shot together with 3] , after which he created such hits as Pita Putra (1988), Pahari Kanya (1990), Prabhati Pakhir Gaan (1992). Among his other popular films: Daag (2001), Kanyadaan (2002), Bidhata and Barood (2003), Rong (2004) and Ramdhenu (2011) [1] [5] . Hiya Diya Niya , released in 2000, became the first blockbuster of Assamese cinema , earning at the box office 1 crore (1 million rupees) with a budget of 25 lakh (2.5 thousand rupees) [3] . Barua received the state award for best director in the romantic drama Nayak in 2002 [4] and the national film award for the best feature film in Assamese for Dinabandhu in 2005 [6] . His last film was Priyar Priyo, starring in 2017. In the same year, the director was awarded the for his lifetime achievements [7] . In 2018, he was chosen to be awarded the Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikiya Prize [8] .

For two decades, he also wrote about 90 popular plays and directed the television series Papu Niipur Sangbad , whose name became a household name in Assam [5] .

Barua died at his residence in around 1:55 on the night of April 7, 2018 [5] . He left his wife Manjula, who was an actress and costume designer in the Assamese film industry, son Manas and daughter Pooja [4] [9] .
