Biography
Plato Baranov was born on October 20, 1827; from the nobles [1] . He studied at the Imperial College of Jurisprudence , began his service in the office of the VIII Department of the Senate and from 1865 until his death was director of the Senate Archive, which brought in much better condition than he was under his predecessors [2] .
In 1872, Baranov undertook, with the Highest Permission, the publication of an inventory of the Highest Commandments stored in the Senate Archive, since the establishment of the Senate, under the title " Archive of the Governing Senate ." In total, from 1872 to 1878, three volumes of the “ Archive ” were published, of which the first one concludes: An inventory of the registered Highest decrees and commands of the reign of Emperor Peter the Great , 1704-1725; the second is an inventory of the Highest decrees and orders stored in the St. Petersburg Senate Archive, for the 16th century, 1725-1740. (with three portraits: Catherine I , Peter II and Anna Ioannovna ), and the third - an inventory of the Highest decrees and orders, for 1740-1762; with pointers. Despite the fact that these “inventories” represent only lists of headings of decrees and decrees, indicating where which command is located in the archive, they are very important, as they have discovered many new acts that are relevant to all aspects of life. It is enough to point, for example, to Volume III, in which of 4280 headings of decrees and decrees it turned out to be not included in the full collection of laws - 3742 acts [3] [2] [4] .
Regarding the reviews of these inventories, in Russian Antiquity No. 3 for 1879, P.I. Baranov published an objection in a separate pamphlet (1879), sufficiently explaining the goals and motives that guided him in publishing his work. His “ descriptions ” for the reign of Catherine II remained during the author’s lifetime only in manuscripts [2] .
In compiling indexes of names for the “Inventory,” P. Baranov began to compile senators' forms for the purpose of compiling their common vocabulary, but during his life he managed to publish only a biography of Mikhail Andreevich Balugyansky (St. Petersburg, 1882). The materials remaining after him passed into the ownership of his nephew P. N. Semenov, who partially printed them in the Readings of the Moscow Society of History and Antiquities of Russia for 1886 and separately, under the title: “ Biographical Essays on Senators Based on Materials Collected by P. I . Baranov " [5] , and everything else was acquired by A. A. Polovtsov , as material for the" Russian Biographical Dictionary " [2] [6] .
In addition, Baranov published in “Russian Antiquity” the following materials: “The Order of Peter the Great on compensation for archaeological finds ” (1872, vol. VI); “ Tsarina Praskovya Fedorovna and her daughters; their letters to V. F. Saltykov, 1721-1723 "(ib.) and" Duchess Anna Ioannovna before accession to the throne in her letters, 1726-1729 "(1884, vol. XLIV) [2] [7] .
Platon Ivanovich Baranov died on December 24, 1884 [2] .
