Biography

Born January 22, 1859 at Fort Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, in the family of Brigadier General George Bell (1828-1907).

He studied at the US Military Academy . [1] After receiving his diploma in 1880, he was in military service and was in many places in the country, including in forts: Fort Maginnis , Fort Shaw , Fort Ellis , Fort Snelling and Fort Missoula . In the 1890s, George Bell was a professor of military sciences at Cornell University . In 1894, he received a law degree here and passed the exam for a lawyer in New York . [2]

Member of the Spanish-American War , participated in the Santiago Campaign , as well as in the Samar Campaign of the Philippine-American War . In 1907, Bell was appointed to the Committee on Infantry Equipment ( Infantry Equipment Board ), took part in the development of many devices that were later used in the First World War . [3]

In 1913, George Bell took command of the 16th Infantry Regiment, stationed at Fort Presidio in San Francisco , California . In 1916, he received the rank of brigadier general and was appointed head of the El Paso district during the Mexican expedition of 1916. [four]

At the start of World War I, Bell was promoted to major general and appointed commander of the 33rd Division of the . She went through the whole war, fighting in the Australian armed forces of the British Empire and the French corps. [5] After the war, he commanded the VI Corps , headquartered in Chicago , Illinois , until reaching the age of mandatory retirement in 1923.

After the end of his military career, Bell was elected president of Chicago's Hill State Bank .

Died October 29, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. He was buried in the city necropolis of Rosehill Cemetery and Mausoleum . [6]

Among the many awards of George Bell: the medal "For Outstanding Service" (US Army) , Military Cross (France) (with a palm branch), the Order of the Legion of Honor and the Order of Saints Michael and George (Knight Commander).

In honor of the American general, the Bell Bowl Prairie amphitheater in Illinois , Chicago Bell Park , the George Bell Post division of the American Legion and Fort Bell in Bermuda (now Naval Air Station Bermuda ) were named.
