Biography and career
Dzhemal Davidovich Tsertsvadze was born on May 7, 1939 in Tbilisi. He began his sports career in athletics and basketball, then switched to handball [1] .
From 1958 to 1975 he played for the Tbilisi Petrel, with whom he won the USSR Championship twice (1962, 1964). 10 times in a row (1962-1971) became the top scorer in the championships of the USSR [2] . Master of Sports of the USSR. During his career, he scored about 7000 goals [3] .
He played in the USSR national team from 1959 to 1972. He participated in three world championships (1964, 1967, 1970), where he was twice recognized as the most technical player in the tournament and three times included in the symbolic national team. For the USSR national team played 78 matches and scored 276 goals.
In 1980, he founded a special school of the Olympic reserve for handball, which bears his name.
In 2014, he was awarded the “Knight of Sports of Georgia” [4] .
He died on January 28, 2019 in Tbilisi [5] .
