Maupihaa

Maupihaa ( fr. Maupihaa ) is an uninhabited atoll within the Leeward Islands of the Society Island Islands ( French Polynesia ). Other names of the island are Mopelia ( Lord Howe ). Located 230 km west of the island of Bora Bora .

Geography

The length of the island is about 8 km. In the center - a deep (up to 40 m) lagoon surrounded by a sunken reef from three sides. The eastern side consists of several motu . The area of ​​the island is 2.6 km².

History

The atoll was opened in 1767 by Samuel Wallis , as well as the atolls of Fenoi-Hour and Motu-Ona . In 1917, Maupihaa was leased by a company from the island of Tahiti , engaged in the production of copra . Traces of ancient Polynesian past have been found on the island.

Administrative division

Administratively Manouhe is part of the Maupiti commune.
