History

The German painter and graphic artist [4] Martin Schongaeur created the “Madonna in the Arbor of Roses” in 1473 especially for the church of St. Martin in the city of Colmar in France . It depicts the Virgin Mary, dressed in red, with the baby Christ, whom she holds in her arms. They are in the gazebo, and they are surrounded by roses. Angels, dressed in blue, hold a crown above Madonna’s head [1] . Her head is slightly tilted to the side [5] . The painting has a golden background [1] . Probably, the work contains allusions to the biblical " locked garden " [6] . Arbor of roses in the picture of Shongaeur symbolizes paradise [4] .

At the end of the 18th century, the painting was kept in a Jesuit monastery, together with the Isengheim Altar, among ammunition and various food supplies [7] .

"Madonna in a gazebo of roses" is considered the only dated work of Martin Schongauer, which has survived and has survived to our time [6] .

Currently, the picture is in the Dominican Cathedral of the XIII century on the Dominican Square in Colmar [8] .
