The museum is located in Nizhny Novgorod on Proviantskaya Street in a one-story building, where the composer was born into the family of hereditary nobleman Alexei Konstantinovich Balakirev (1809–1869) and lived for the first 6 years [1] .
In 1973, the house was resettled and renovated. There was an exposition dedicated to the life and work of the composer, created by employees of the State Museum named after Gorky. The house also housed the Gorky Union of Composers and the choral society. Then there were musical evenings dedicated to the memory of M. Balakirev. [2] Subsequently, the museum was closed, and, after renovation, opened again in 2018.
The museum’s collection contains numerous pieces by the composer, musical instruments, notes, etc. There is a chamber concert hall at the house-museum.
