History
On March 31, 1520, Fernand Magellan’s expedition ships stopped here for the winter. Since for Catholics this is the day of St. Julian of Caesarea, the bay was named after this saint. On April 1, the first mass in the history of Argentina was celebrated here. Part of the ships rebelled, but the rebellion was crushed, and Magellan landed some of the rioters here ashore. Here, Magellan made the first contact with the local people, whom the expedition chronicler Antonio Pigafetta described as “giants”.
In 1577, English pirate Francis Drake visited these places.
In 1780, the Spanish was founded 10 km north-west from the center of the modern city, but it was soon abandoned.
The modern city was founded in 1901.
