Biography

Born April 13, 1760 in the house Balcony House in the town of Shifnal Shropshire.

He received his initial education at Bridgnorth Endowed School Gymnasium and at Pembroke College , University of Oxford . Then, in the early 1780s, chemist and physicist Joseph Black and professor of natural history enrolled in a medical course at the University of Edinburgh . Beddows also studied medicine in London with surgeon . In 1784, Thomas Beddows published a translation of Lazzaro Spallanzani's Dissertations on Natural History and in 1785 a translation of the work of Thorburn Bergman's Essays on Elective Attractions . In 1786, Beddows received his MD from Pembroke College , University of Oxford.

After 1786, Thomas Beddous visited Paris , where he met Lavoisier . In 1788, he was appointed professor of chemistry at Oxford University : his lectures attracted a large and grateful audience. The sympathy of the scientist with respect to the French Revolution set some scientists against him and he resigned in 1792. The following year, he published the book History of Isaac Jenkins , in which he showed the vices of drunkenness, 40,000 copies were sold.

Beddows was engaged in the study and treatment of tuberculosis , creating a clinic in Bristol that existed from 1793 to 1799, and then organized the Bristol Pneumatic Institution Medical Research Center in Bristol . Here he was engaged in testing various gases for the treatment of tuberculosis; later, this institution was transformed into a general hospital. Between 1793 and 1799, Thomas Beddows had a clinic on Hope Square in the Bristol area of Hotwells , where he treated tuberculosis patients.

He died on December 24, 1808 [4] in the town of Clifton , a suburb of Bristol [5] .

Contemporaries spoke of the scientist as a man of great energy and vast knowledge, which he directed to noble and charitable purposes. He sought to achieve the public good by popularizing medical knowledge.

Personal life

In 1794, he married Anna Maria Edgeworth (1773–1824), the daughter of his fellow Bristol Pneumatic Institution , Richard Edgeworth . Their son Thomas Beddows was born in 1803 in Bristol.

Thomas Beddows was a great friend of Samuel Coleridge . [6]
