Maria Karnilova ( born Maria Karnilova ; formerly Karniloff ; August 3, 1920, Hartford , Connecticut - April 20, 2001, New York , New York ) is an American theater actress and ballet dancer [1] .

Biography
Born in Hartford, Connecticut in the family of Philip and Stepanida Dovgolenko, Russian immigrants from the Russian Empire . The family later moved to Brooklyn , New York . In the same place in 1927, Maria began to practice ballet in a children's group at the Metropolitan Opera [2] . In 1939, she became an artist of the newly opened Ballet Theater , then she took the pseudonym Maria Karniloff (later she was replaced by Maria Karnilova).
In 1946, she made her Broadway debut in the musical Call Me Mr.. In 1965, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in the musical Violinist on the Roof [3] . Four years later, she received another nomination for Tony for Best Actress in the musical Zorba [2] .
Karinlova participated mainly in theatrical productions, she also starred in two films: the musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964) and the comedy Married to the Mafia (1988), which became one of her last works. The actress died at the age of 80 in 2001.
Personal life
In 1948, Maria married actor George S. Irving, they had two children in a marriage [1] .
