The stone Mikhailovsky Cathedral was built in 1089 and was one of the largest ancient Russian temples of the pre-Mongol period . The initiator of the construction was Metropolitan Pereyaslavsky Ephraim , who also laid down a number of other Pereyaslav temples. The parameters of the St. Michael's Cathedral, established during the excavations, were 27.6 m wide and 33 m long [1] . In terms of its plan, it is close to the Kiev St. Sophia Cathedral, and inside it is divided into columns into five longitudinal sections, the naves . The walls were decorated with frescoes and mosaics, and the floor was paved with mosaics, slate slabs and multi-colored glazed tiles. The cathedral had two extensions - in front of the central entrance and at the northeast corner.
The cathedral was located in the southwestern part of Pereyaslavsky Dytynets and was the tomb of Pereyaslavl princes . Near the temple was located the episcopal palace.
In 1124, the cathedral suffered from an earthquake, but was rebuilt. A new earthquake caused the temple damage in 1230 . St. Michael's Cathedral was ransacked and destroyed in 1239 during the capture of Pereyaslavl by the troops of Batu . In 1646-1666, the wooden St. Michael's Church of St. Michael’s Monastery was built on its foundation. The remains of the foundation, discovered during excavations in 1949 , can be viewed in the Museum of Architecture of Old Russian Pereyaslav
