History

In 1450, the King of Scotland donated to Bishop Jacob II William Turnbull and all the inhabitants of Glasgow a swampy piece of land on the bank of Clyde . Initially, cattle grazed here, washed and bleached linen, dried fishing nets and went swimming.

In 1817 and 1826, the first attempts were made to ennoble the site of the future park: the territory was leveled and drained, rivers and streams were enclosed in pipes underground.

Monument to Nelson

In 1806 , a year after the death of Horatio Nelson, a monument with a height of 43.5 meters was erected in his honor in Glasgow Green. It became the first monument to the great naval commander in Great Britain - the Nelson column in Dublin appeared only after two years, and in London - after three decades [1] .

4 years after the erection to the monument, lightning struck. As a result, a long structural crack formed in it. In 2002, during the restoration of the monument, which spent about £ 900,000 , the damage accumulated over two centuries was eliminated, and the monument itself was restored to its original appearance [1] .
