Atletico is a ten-time champion of Spain , a ten-time winner of the Spanish Cup , as well as a three-time winner of the UEFA Europa League for the seasons 2009/10 , 2011/12 and 2017/18 .

In addition, the team played the Cup / Champions League finals three times, maintaining a draw in regular time matches. However, in the replay, in extra time or in the penalty shootout, it was inferior to the opponents.

History

Atletico Madrid, one of the most successful and popular Spanish clubs, was founded on April 26, 1903 by three Basque students studying in Madrid. This club was not conceived from the very beginning as independent and independent, and was considered something like a branch of Athletics from Bilbao , so it did not take part in competitions. But in friendly matches at the local level he proved himself to be a very efficient team. And only on February 20, 1907, having registered with the Spanish Football Federation under the name "Athletic Club de Madrid", the club became completely independent and received the right to speak in official tournaments.

From the very beginning, the colors of the club repeated the colors of Athletics from Bilbao - a uniform in blue and white. But in 1911, red-and-white, vertical-striped t-shirts were tested. This combination of colors was then used in droves in Spanish factories for the production of mattresses.

At first, the team did not have its own field. Soon the situation through the efforts of club president Julian Ruete changed. On February 9, 1913, O'Donnell Stadium hosted the premiere match.

In 1923, Athletic moved to the new metropolitan de Madrid stadium, which can accommodate 35,800 spectators. The premiere took place on May 13, with the participation of Real Sociedad , which was beaten with a score of 2: 1. In the first half of the 1920s, the club managed to win regional tournaments three times, and in 1926 Athletic was close to winning the Spanish Cup when it lost to the Barcelona final (2: 3), having conceded a decisive goal in extra time.

According to the results of his performances, “Athletic Club de Madrid” was invited to the first championship of Spain (1928/29) , in which he took sixth place. However, already in the next season the club took last place and took off. He returned to the elite league in 1934 thanks to its expansion to 12 teams. Soon the club was again to be sent to the second division, but this was prevented by the Civil War. After the championship was resumed, “ Real Oviedo ” provided the chance to remain in the Spanish football elite with “ Real Oviedo ”, who asked the federation for a one-year pause needed to restore the destroyed stadium. But the “Athletics” was not so simple. Having lost eight people killed in the war, the club was forced to team up with the Air Force team. Having received the new name Athletic Aviation de Madrid on October 4, 1939, the club was supposed to hold a butt match with another contender for a place in the elite - Osasuna . On November 26, the game was won in Valencia (3: 1).

The first two seasons after the resumption of the championship, Athletic Aviation finished in first place. For all this was a complete surprise. It is worth noting Ricardo Zamora , the former best goalkeeper in the world who coached the team in both winning campaigns.

In connection with the decree of Generalissimo Franco on renaming foreign names in the Spanish way, the name of the club was slightly transformed in 1941 to Atletico Aviation de Madrid, and in 1947 the club management decided to exclude the military component from the name and return to the original one - Atletico de Madrid ”, which is preserved to this day. In the same year, “mattresses” achieved the biggest victory in the derby against “ Real ” (5: 0) in the entire history of the game.

Under the leadership of Elenio Herrera , who came in 1949, Atlético won the champion title twice - in 1950 and 1951 . French goalkeeper Marcel Domingo , defender Alfonso Aparicio and star troika of attacks - the best Moroccan football player of all time Larbi Benbarek , Hendry Karlsson and the best scorer in the history of the club - Adrian Escudero (150 goals in the league) shone in the triumph. In the 1950/51 season, Atlético achieved their highest performance, scoring 87 goals.

With the departure to the “ Malaga ” Herrera, the “mattresses” slowed down a little. Before their next championship in 1966, they became vice-champions four times and seven times as Cup finalists, having won it three times. Particularly acute was the confrontation with Real Madrid. Three matches had to be held between clubs in Madrid to find out the winner in the semi-final of the 1959 Champions Cup , in the decisive additional match, “Atletico” lost 1: 2 to their compatriots. The very next year, the “mattresses” managed to avenge the final of the Spanish Cup by defeating Real Madrid at Chamartin (the future Santiago Bernabeu) with a score of 3: 1. The final of 1961 again turned into a capital derby. “Creamy”, craving for revenge, scored two goals, but this time, “Atletico” was stronger (3: 2).

In 1962, the "mattresses" won the Cup Winners' Cup , winning 3-0 in the additional match of the finals Fiorentina . A year later, Atletico again played in the tournament finals, but failed to defend the title and lost to Tottenham Hotspur (1: 5).

With the advent of the club's president Vicente Calderon in 1964, the Atletico gold years began. October 2, 1966 opened a stadium, built under the leadership of the new president. Soon the stadium was given his name. After winning champion titles in 1966, 1970, 1973, 1977, Atletico became the third team in Spain. The leading players of this period were goalkeeper Reina , midfielder Adelardo , who set a club record for the number of matches - 399, striker José Eulogio Garete , future coaches - Javier Iruureta and Luis Aragones . After the ban on legionnaires was lifted in 1973, Atlético was strengthened by the Argentines - Ruben Ayala , Ramon Heredia and Ruben Diaz . In their appearance, Native American features were clearly visible, because of which the club acquired a new nickname - “Indians”.

In 1974, Bayern were opposed to the “Indians” in the Champions Cup final. The Madrid were 1-0 in the match, but in the last minute the Germans equalized. It took a replay, where Bayern won 4-0. The Germans “generously” lost the right to compete for the Intercontinental Cup , where Atletico in the two-match final turned out to be stronger than the Argentinean Independente . The coach of the team was Luis Aragones, who took up this position four times - in the seasons 1974-80, 1982-87, 1991-93 and 2002-03.

In 1986, under his leadership, Atletico reached the finals of the Cup Cup , where he lost to Dynamo Kyiv (0: 3).

Diego Simeone - coach since 2011

In 1987, the era of Vicente Calderon ended and the era of President Jesus Gil began, which immediately strengthened the composition by purchasing Bernd Schuster from Real Madrid, Portuguese virtuoso Paulo Futre . The team showed beautiful football, but only two Royal Cups could win - in 1991 and 1992. Changing coaches like gloves, Jesus Gil settled on Radomir Antic , who won the championship and the Cup in 1996, having made the first double. The team, using tactics ruthless to the opponent, stood out as defensive midfielder Diego Simeone and central defender Juan Manuel Lopez, who received 44 yellow cards in the first 65 matches for Atlético.

In the 1999/00 season, taking 19th place, the "mattresses" after 65 years in the elite dropped into the second division. Under the leadership of Luis Aragones in the summer of 2002, they returned as an example.

May 27, 2001 the debut of Fernando Torres , who later became the captain of “Atletico” at the age of 19. In 2006, Portuguese midfielders Kostinha and Maniche , Argentine Sergio Aguero joined him, but the team was able to take only 7th place in the championship. After the departure of Fernando Torres and Martin Petrov to the English Premier League in 2007, Luis Garcia , Diego Forlan , Simau Sabroza appeared in Atlético. The 2007/08 season was the best in the last decade - 4th in the league.

In 2008, having beaten Schalke 04 in the third qualifying round, after a 12-year hiatus, the mattresses made it to the Champions League group stage, where they were able to take second place in the group, never losing and skipping ahead to Liverpool . In the 1/8 finals, “Atletico” met with “Porto” and lost only in the number of goals in a foreign field (2: 2 at home and 0: 0 away).

On May 13, 2010, in a tense and persistent match with Fulham at the Hamburg Arena in the German city of Hamburg , Atlético won 2-1 in extra time and thus became the first owner of the updated Europa League tournament. Double in the team was marked Diego Forlan at 32 and 116 minutes. In the UEFA Super Cup match , which took place on August 28, 2010 in Monaco at the Louis II stadium, Atlético defeated the winner of the 2009/10 International Champions League with a score of 2-0.

On May 9, 2012, having defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-0, he became the two-time winner of the Europa League.

On August 31, 2012, having beaten Chelsea with a score of 4: 1, he became a two-time winner of the UEFA Super Cup.

In 2013, in 1/16 of the Europa League, Atletico lost to Kazan Rubin with a total score of 1: 2.

In the 2013/14 national championship, the club was among the main contenders for the title, issuing a series of victories in the first eight meetings. In the last game of the 2013/14 Spanish Championship in the “golden match” with Barcelona , the team tied 1-1 and again 18 years later became the country's champion, gaining 90 points.

The club began its performance in the Champions League in the 2013/2014 season with a victory over the Russian “ Zenith ” in the group stage, from where with 16 points came in 1/8 from 1 place. On April 30, 2014, Atletico made a ticket to the Champions League final, defeating London's Chelsea in the return match of the semifinal with a score of 3: 1. In the first game, the opponents did not score goals for each other. In the final, Atletico's rival was their fellow countrymen from Madrid. In a dramatic match, Real Madrid won 4-1 overtime.

Having lost a number of key players in the offseason, led by Diego Costa , the “mattresses” in the Spanish Super Cup took revenge on Real Madrid (1: 1, 1: 0). In the championship of Spain, the team took third place. The decoration of the season was the Madrid derby in the second round, in which a principled opponent was defeated with a score of 4: 0.

Anthem

The club’s current anthem was written in 1972. The authors of the anthem are Jose Aguilar and Angel Curras.

Atleti, atleti, Atlético de Madrid
Atleti, atleti, Atlético de Madrid
Jugando, ganando, peleas como el mejor
Porque siempre la afición
Se estremece con pasión
Cuando quedas entre todos campeón
Y se ve frente al balón
A un equipo de verdad
Que esta tarde de ambiente llenará

Yo me voy al manzanares
Al estadio Vicente Calderón
Donde acuden a millares
Los que gustan de fútbol de emoción

Porque luchan como hermanos
Defendiendo sus colores
En un juego noble y sano
Derrochando coraje y corazón

Atleti, atleti, Atlético de Madrid
Atleti, alteti, Atlético de Madrid
Jugando, ganando, peleas como el mejor
Porque siempre la afición
Se estremece con pasió
Cuando quedas entre todos campeón
Y se ve frente al balón
A un equipo de verdad
Que esta tarde de ambiente llenará

Equipment and Sponsors

Atlético was initially played in blue and white, similar to the colors of Athletic from Bilbao. Since 1911, the Club of Madrid has changed colors to red and white, and it is believed that these colors were chosen because they were the cheapest and were used in the manufacture of mattresses for beds. Therefore, the club received the nickname "Colchoneros" (" mattress "). Since 1999, Nike has been a mold manufacturer.

In October 2012, at the invitation of the President of FC “ Baku ” Hafiz Mammadov, the General Director of “Atletico” Miguel Angel Gil visited Azerbaijan . During the visit, an agreement was signed on cooperation between the Baku clubs and Madrid Atletico. In December 2012, the club signed a contract for $ 16 million [3] for a year and a half with the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan [4] . On December 1, 2012, a ceremony was held in Madrid to present an agreement on cooperation between Atletico and the Azerbaijani side, as well as a commemorative form with the inscription “Azerbaijan Land of Fire” (“Azerbaijan - Country of Lights”) [5] . For the first time, Atletico football players took to the field in uniform with the ministry logo in December 2012 in a friendly match against Real Madrid [4] [5] .
