History

Clan Origin

The founder of the clan MacDonald of Danneweg and Glens was John More Tanister MacDonald , who was the second son of John MacDonald (1320-1386), Lord of the Isles, 6th Chief of Clan MacDonald, and Margaret Stewart. John More Tanister MacDonald married Margaret Bisset of Glens ( Antrim County ). Thanks to this marriage, the MacDonalds of Dannigeg claimed the lordship of Glens in Ireland. Prior to that, they already owned land on the island of Islay and the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland. He and his descendants became known as the lords of Dunneweg and Glens, although they did not possess them until the 16th century. Their residences were Dannweg Castle on Islay and Glens in County Antrim .

XV , XVI and XVII century

John More Tanister was assassinated by James Campbell in 1427 . His son Donald Balloch MacDonald, 2nd leader of the clan , on the side of the Lord of the Islands participated in 1431 in the Battle of Inverloha , during which the royal army was defeated under the command of Alexander Stewart, Count Mara . Donald Bullock MacDonald supported his cousin Alexander MacDonald, Lord of the Isles, Earl Ross, and head of clan MacDonald .

The third leader of the clan, John More MacDonald (died 1499 ), along with his son and heir John Katanah and three grandchildren, were detained due to the betrayal of Macdonald from Ardnamurhan and put to death in Edinburgh on charges of treason. The 5th leader of the clan became Alexander Carrach MacDonald (c. 1480-1538), grandson of John More MacDonald, who escaped in 1499 and fled to Ireland. He was succeeded in 1538 by his eldest son, James MacDonald (d. 1565), the 6th leader of Clan MacDonald from Dannweg.

After the death of James MacDonald, the 6th leader of the MacDonald clan of Danneweg , Glens in the county of Antrim was captured by one of his younger brothers, Sorley Boy MacDonnell (died 1590). In 1565, in the battle of Glentasi Sorley, MacDonnell was defeated by Shane O'Neill in Ireland. Sorley Fight McDonnell took the oath of allegiance to King James of Scotland IV Stewart , and his fourth son and successor Randal MacDonnell (d. 1636 ), the future first Earl of Antrim , brought lockage to Queen Elizabeth Tudor of England.

Angus MacDonald, the 8th leader of the clan MacDonald of Danneweg (d. 1614 ), quarreled a lot with his eldest son, Sir James Macdonald (d. 1626 ), the future 9th leader of the clan MacDonald of Dannweg, because of the intrigues of the clan Campbell . In 1598, James MacDonald, commanded the detachments of Clan MacDonald of Danneweg, who defeated the Maclane clan , commanded by Sir Lachman Moor McLean, who died in this battle [3] .

In 1620, due to further intrigue of the Campbell clan, Sir James MacDonald lost control of Islay Island and Kintyre Peninsula. During the Civil War in Scotland, MacDonalds from Dannieweg, supporters of James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose , regained their ancestral lands for a short time.

A well-known MacDonald member from Danniveg was Alasder McColl (1620-1647), an active participant in the Civil Wars in Ireland and Scotland, fought under the command of James Graham, the Marquis of Montrose .

The last head of the clan, Sir James MacDonald, the 9th leader of Clan MacDonald of Danniveg , died in London in 1626 .

Residence of Clan Chiefs

Danniveig Castle [4] , three miles east of Port Ellen on Islay , was the residence of the head of the clan MacDonald of Dannieveg. From the castle are now only ruins. The last MacDonald of Danneweg defeated the Maclane clan at the Battle of Triig Gruinnert in 1598 , but MacDonald in 1608 was forced to surrender the castle to the royal troops. By decision of the king, Danniveig Castle came under the control of the Bishop of the Islands, but in 1612 Alasder Colkitto MacDonald regained his ancestral castle [4] . In 1615, the castle was taken over by the Campbell clan from Codor , and Alasder Colkitto MacDonald fled, and many of his warriors were killed. [4] In 1647, Alasder Colkitto MacDonald was able to return to Danniveig Castle. In the same year, the castle was besieged by David Leslie, 1st Lord of Newark . The castle was forced to capitulate, and Colkitto was hanged. Castle Danniveig owned the Campbell clan from Kodor until 1677 , when Sir Hugh Campbell moved his residence to Islay House.
