In the center of the lake is a large peninsula connected to the shore by a narrow isthmus [1] , composed of sedimentary rocks of the Rio-Lakteo formation dating from the Devonian , Carboniferous and Permian periods [2] .
It feeds on the waters of the Andean glaciers [1] . Runoff from the lake is carried out to the neighboring Lake Asara , belonging to the Mayer River system [3] [1] [4] . Up to the time 2200 years ago, Belgrano was part of the Kalodenius paleoozero along with the neighboring reservoirs Burmeister , Asara , Nansen , Mogote and Volkan [2] .
The lake and its environs are part of the Perito Moreno National Park [2] . The climate of the territory is continental, with a temperature difference from −30 ° C in winter to +15 ° C in summer. Woody vegetation is represented by notofagus forests, the predominant species are lenga (on the west coast and on the peninsula) and nyyr (on the north coast, about 480 ha) [2] [5] . The lake recorded a population of American mink [2] .
