Biography
Waldemar Wappenhans was born on October 21, 1893 in the family of Professor Friedrich Wappenhans. Since 1902 he studied at the cadet school in Karlsruhe , then in Lichterfeld . In June 1914 he received the rank of lieutenant. He participated in the First World War , was a battalion adjutant of the 239th Infantry Regiment. In April 1915, he was seriously injured by a fragment of a shell. After recovering in January 1916, he was transferred to aviation by an observer. In December 1916 he was again wounded and until March 1917 he stayed in the hospital. Since March 1917 - pilot of the 300th Pasha Aviation Squad (in Palestine ). In 1918, he commanded 27 squadrons on the Western Front . Then he served in the border service in Silesia and was discharged with the rank of Oberleutenant. Then he worked as a volunteer in the Halpaus-Zigaretten campaign and eventually became the head of the Danzig branch of this company.
February 1, 1931 joined the NSDAP (party ticket 456 090) and the SS (No. 22 924). Until November 1931 he was the commander of the staff of the SS Absnite in Danzig. From February to September 1932, he was the head of the 6th SSA in the same city. From September 1932 to April 1, 1933 - commander of the 19th standard (regiment) SS Westphalia-North. In March 1933 he was elected to the Prussian Landtag . From April to December 1933 he commanded the SS Weser standard, and then until the end of October 1934 the SS standard "East Frisia." In the future, he led the numerous SSN.
World War II
From September 4 to September 1, 1942 - the head of the SS and police in Volyn in Brest-Litovsk . In this position, he is responsible for numerous war crimes, such as the extermination of 13,500 residents of the ghetto in Vladimir-Volynsky and for the massacres of 160,000 people from May to December 1942 [1] . Also until April 1943 he was the head of the SS and police in Nikolaev and from October 4, 1942 to October 1943 - the head of the SS and police "Dnepropetrovsk - Krivoy Rog". Later he was appointed head of the SS and the police for special assignments under the Supreme Head of the Police and SS in Ukraine, Hans Adolf Prutzman . In January 1945, he was transferred to the Western Front to Field Marshal Walter Model . At the end of the war he was ordered to go to Berlin , but Wappenhans defected.
After the war
After the war, he hid under the name of Hans Zeeman, worked as an agricultural worker. In November 1949, he was exposed and arrested by British military intelligence and transferred to the German criminal police of Hanover . During interrogations, he spoke about the partisan struggle in the Soviet Union, however, he denied his involvement in war crimes. After his release, he worked at the Heimbs and Co coffee trading company in Braunschweig . He died in December 1967 in Hanover [2] .
