Biography

After graduating from the Karelian-Finnish State University , in 1950 she entered the graduate school of the Karelian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences . The supervisor was Aino Semenovna Lutta , a well-known specialist in the blood-sucking dipterans of the European North. After graduating from graduate school, from 1953 Usova began working at the Department of Biology of Donetsk State Medical Institute . In 1954, Usova defended her Ph.D. thesis on the subject “Frogs (family Simuliidae , Diptera) of the Karelian-Finnish SSR and the Murmansk Region ”. In 1964, based on the materials of the monograph “The fauna of midges of Karelia and the Murmansk region (Diptera, Simuliidae)”, a doctor’s degree in biological sciences was awarded. In 1965, Usova was offered to become dean of the newly created biological faculty of Donetsk State University . Until 1971, she combined the duties of dean with the post of head of the department of zoology, which she headed until 1982 [2] .

Scientific Achievements

The research of Zinaida Vasilievna Usova for 60 years was aimed at solving the problems of medical and veterinary entomology. She was engaged in identifying the role of blood-sucking insects and ticks in the transfer of pathogens of human and animal diseases. Under the guidance of Usova and with her direct participation, detailed information was first obtained on the fauna, life cycle features and factors determining the activity of blood-sucking mosquitoes , midges, armored and gamasid ticks. Were developed, justified and implemented measures to protect a person from sinus . She created the largest scientific school of midge researchers in the territory of the former Soviet Union and 23 dissertations were defended under her leadership [2] . Usova took part in organizing expeditions to Buryatia and the Far East , to the Black , White , Barents and Sea of Japan [3] . The collection of midges collected by Usova stored at the Institute of Biology of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences , totals more than 10 thousand copies [4] .
