#dearMoon Project is a planned mission and art project conceived and funded by Japanese billionaire and collector Yusaku Maezawa . A key component of the mission is a private space flight involving Maezawa and several others on board the SpaceX BFR spacecraft flying along a lunar trajectory with the moon circling. The project was announced in September 2018, its implementation is planned no earlier than 2023.

The aim of the project is to provide an opportunity for several artists to fly around the moon for free. As conceived by the founder and sponsor of the mission, the experience of space tourism will inspire the creative people accompanying him to create new works of art. Created by the authors after returning the work will be exhibited to promote world peace.

Maedzawa signed a contract with SpaceX in 2017 for a lunar flight on the much smaller Dragon 2 spaceship with a Falcon Heavy booster that could only accept two passengers. But at the beginning of 2018, SpaceX announced that the Falcon Heavy is being delayed in light of the development of the BFR .

Background

On February 27, 2017, SpaceX announced that it plans to fly two space tourists along a moon trajectory. It became known that these people will be the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa and his friend [2] . In this mission, which was supposed to begin at the end of 2018, it was planned to use the Dragon 2 spaceship already developed under the contract as part of the Commercial Crew Program , and launch using the Falcon Heavy rocket [3] . As a source of revenue for the company, the mission could serve as an impetus in the development of technologies for the future plans of SpaceX to colonize Mars [4] .

At the time of the announcement in 2017, the Dragon 2 ship was under development, and the Falcon Heavy has not yet completed its first launch . SpaceX has decided to move to a lean startup strategy and to combine in a single project low-Earth orbit launch technologies, interplanetary flights , as well as intercontinental flights within the Earth [5] [6] . Analysts noted that the graph presented by SpaceX is too ambitious, since the ship needs modifications to take into account the differences in the flight profile between the proposed lunar mission and its main task of delivering the crew to orbiting near-Earth space stations [7] .

In February 2018, SpaceX announced that it no longer plans to use Falcon Heavy for human spaceflight, and lunar missions will be carried out using a BFR booster [8] [9] . On September 14, 2018, SpaceX announced that a flight to the Moon previously planned under a contract with a passenger would be carried out using the BFR in 2023 [10] [11] . On September 17, it became known that the first private passenger to fly around the moon aboard the BFR would be the Japanese billionaire and renowned art collector Yusaku Maezawa [12] [13] . On the same day, Elon Musk posted on Twitter a photograph taken shortly before the announcement of the lunar mission: it depicts Musk himself with Yusaku Maezawa sitting on his shoulders against the backdrop of the Falcon 9 rocket [14] .

The passengers of the #dearMoon project will be Yusaku Maezawa himself and six to eight worthy artists, whom Maezawa will invite to travel with him for free. During the flight, one or two astronauts and several SpaceX [2] [15] pilots will also be on board. Maezawa expects the flight to inspire creative people to create new works that they can create after returning. Maezawa also believes that this project will help strengthen world peace [16] [1] [2] .

Flight

It is assumed that the flight in 2023 will last 6 days [16] [1] . The ship will follow the trajectory similarly to that along which Apollo 13 moved in 1970, without going into orbit and without landing. During the 2020s, NASA plans two manned flights in similar orbits as part of the Exploration Mission 1 and Exploration Mission 2 missions.
