Geography
It is located 54 km north of the village of Nerchinsky Zavod on the left bank of the Argun River [2] .
History
The village was founded in 1681 as the Argun prison on the right bank of the Argun River near the mouth of the Maritka River. According to the Treaty of Nerchinsk in 1689, the village was moved to the opposite bank to the mouth of the Kamara River.
For 1704 and 1715 the prison was a quadrangular structure measuring 9.4 * 14 meters. On the territory of the prison there was an inn, an order and a court hut, outside it there were cossacks, there were about 50 people in the garrison. The main occupations of the local Cossacks were the collection of yasak from the Tungus , the protection of mineral deposits and a silver smelter, agriculture, and various crafts. In 1719, the Ascension Church opened in the prison. In the 1680-1720s, the route of diplomatic embassies to China passed through the Argun prison.
In 1735, a new, much larger one was built on the site of the old fortress: its dimensions were 47.5 * 64.8 meters, two road gates appeared. On the territory of the prison there was a shiphouse and outbuildings (barns), outside it there were about 70 residential buildings, a church and several more barns.
Due to the loss of military defensive significance in the mid-end of the XVIII century, the prison has ceased to exist. The last mention of it dates back to 1792 [3]
