History
During the campaign known in the history of Argentina as “ Desert Conquest, ” Colonel Conrado Villegas July 9, 1879 (on the anniversary of the declaration of independence of Argentina) founded a settlement on the island of Pacheco, which was named after President Nicolas Avellaneda ; later it changed its name to Choel Choel, derived from the Indian name of these places. Soon after, the settlement was destroyed by flooding, and its inhabitants were forced to move to another place. At the current location of the city, they settled on March 18, 1882.
A post office was opened at the new site in 1883, and after the Salesians of Don Bosco arrived in 1891, a school was opened.
After the administrative center of the city of Viedma was practically washed away by the flood in 1899, the government of the National Territory moved to Choel Choel for several months.
