Title

The railway bridge did not have its own name. The name of the existing pedestrian bridge was chosen during a vote among local residents and is given in honor of the symbol of Alytus - a white rose [2] .

History

In 1897-1899, as part of the construction of the new Grodno-Olita railway line, a three-span metal cantilever bridge was constructed according to the project of engineers N. A. Belelubsky and N. Kharlamov [3] . The work was carried out by the Warsaw company Rudzki & Co. ° ( Polish K. Rudzki i S-ka ). The total construction cost amounted to 700 thousand rubles. The bridge span consisted of trusses of the Gerber system. Two coastal spans 73.2 m long had consoles 13.72 m long, on which the middle, free span 65.43 m long rested. The total length of the bridge was 239 m [4] [5] . The total weight of metal structures of cast iron spans was 1014.288 tons [6] . The flooring of the bridge was also adapted for horse-drawn traffic. Intermediate supports were built from rubble masonry on a caisson foundation (the bottom marks of the caissons from the low-water level are 16.5 m and 13.8 m) [7] . Ice cutters were faced with pure tesca granite.

 Wooden railway bridge

On August 14, 1915, the bridge was blown up by retreating Russian troops [8] . Within two months, the German military built a 15-span wooden railway bridge on high pile supports. In January 1926 it was closed to traffic and dismantled [9] .

In 2009, the remaining bridge piers were included in the Register of Cultural Property of Lithuania (code 33316) [10] .

In 2009, by order of the Municipality of Alytus, the UAB Mitnija company designed a two-level bridge for pedestrians and cyclists [11] . The estimated construction cost was about 40 million litas and the project was not implemented [12] .

In 2012, UAB “Tiltų ekspertų centras” drew up a new project, which was approved for construction. In August 2013, Alkesta UAB began work on the construction of the bridge [12] . The metal structures of the bridge were made in Riga (Latvia). The assembly was carried out at the construction site, in the design position, the structures were mounted using cranes. Spans were installed by UAB Tilsta and Mammoet (Netherlands) [13] . The official opening of the bridge took place on January 8, 2016 [2] .

The bridge supports are reinforced concrete on a pile (foundations) and caisson (intermediate supports) base. The preserved foundations of the railway bridge were used. The height of the bridge above the river is 38.1 m. The length of the bridge is 240.53 m, the width of the bridge is 6.71 m [11] . The bridge is designed for pedestrians and cyclists.
