Biography
The son of the artist K. I. Kolman and the brother of the architect A. K. Kolman . He was educated at the Imperial Academy of Arts (from 1840), where his chief mentors were A. P. Bryullov and K. A. Ton . During his studies, he received awards from the Academy of Arts: a small silver medal (1851) for the "project of the bathhouse" , a large silver (1853) for the "project of the country arena" , and a small gold (1854) for the "project of the public library" . [1] Graduated from the Academy of Arts (1857) with the title of artist of the XIV class and a large gold medal awarded to him for "the project of a theater school and public theater under him . "
Sent as a pensioner of the Academy abroad (1858) for 6 years for further improvement. He visited Morea, Chios, Jerusalem, Smyrna and other places of the East, everywhere studying the preserved monuments of ancient Greek architecture and performing watercolor views of especially curious buildings. At this time, accompanied the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich in his voyage through the Mediterranean Sea and compiled an extensive album of drawings, which later became the property of His Highness. After spending some time in Paris and other places in France, traveled to England, Italy and Spain. In the last of these countries he especially studied the ancient castle of the Moorish kings, the Alhambra. Magnificent drawings on the restoration of this magnificent monument of Arab architecture gave him a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition (1863). Upon the return of Coleman to Russia (1864), he was awarded the title of academician. The most important of these were acquired by the Academy of Arts for its museum. In addition to these drawings, Colman brought from his trip a lot of other watercolors, which were distributed to the hands of art lovers, who highly appreciated them as works of a kind exemplary. Colman’s architectural activity, upon his return to St. Petersburg, consisted of writing projects and manufacturing various buildings for private individuals, as well as fulfilling service duties, first in the technical and construction committee of the Ministry of the Interior , and then in the same committee under 2- m and the 3rd offices of the Office of His Majesty . For the project of the pavilion of St. Petersburg for the world exhibition, the Academy of Arts elevated him to the rank of professor of the 1st degree (1866). In the artistic environment, he was known as an artist with a delicate taste and deep knowledge of various architectural styles. [2]
