Birgit Schütz ( German: Birgit Schütz ; born October 8, 1958 , Brandenburg an der Havel ) is a German rower who played for the German Democratic rowing team in the late 1970s. Champion of the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow , winner of the silver medal of the World Cup, winner of many regattas of national and international importance.

Biography

Birgit Schütz was born on October 8, 1958 in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel , East Germany . She was trained in Potsdam at the Dynamo sports club under the guidance of the famous rower Heinrich Mederov , European champion and Olympic bronze medalist.

First declared itself in rowing in 1977, becoming the silver medalist of the GDR championship.

The first serious success at the adult international level was achieved in the 1978 season, when she entered the main team of the East German national team and visited the world championship in Karapiro , from where she brought the silver dignity award won in the standings of oars with a steering - they were ahead of the USSR team in the final.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, Schütz won the right to defend the country's honor at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow - as part of the team, which also included rowers Kersten Neisser , Christian Köpke , Martina Bösler , Gaby Kün , Ilona Richter , Marita Zandig , Karin Metze and steering Marina Wilke , took first place in the women's eights, thus winning the Olympic gold medal. For this outstanding achievement at the end of the season she was awarded the Order of Merit to the Fatherland in silver [1] .

After the Moscow Olympics, it no longer showed any significant results in the international arena [2] .
