Pre-election environment
As a result of the 2009 presidential election , for the first time since the end of the civil war in 1992, FMLN candidate Mauricio Funes became president. These elections were viewed as a test by the Funes government since it came to power. The FMLN controlled the Legislative Assembly of the country in a coalition with GANA, formed by people from the conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) [2] .
