Architectural Features
In plan, the Shah Abbas mosque in Keshlya has a square shape. The plan of the mosque repeats the scheme typical of the mosques of the Shirvan-Absheron architectural school and is similar to the plan of the Tuba Shahi mosque in the village of Mardakan (1481). [1] In the center of the building is the main worship hall, consisting of four large arches. Arches connect to the round dome of the mosque. On the sides of the building are built small rooms with an arched ceiling. It is these rooms that square the plan. [2]
The portal of the mosque in its architectural structure is simple and does not have a stalactite half dome. The architect tried to connect the section of the portal with the total volume of the building. To this end, the mosque architect used the method of combining the portal frame with the cornice of the building. This method was also used in the construction of Divan Khan . [2] Above the portal there is an inscription in Arabic.
The altar and the chair are made of hewn massive stone. The windows of the mosque are made with high craftsmanship. The first layer of windows consists of two layers: the first layer is wood, and the second is hewn stone.
After the establishment of Soviet power in Azerbaijan in 1920, the Bolsheviks began a struggle with religion. Like many other religious institutions, the Shah Abbas mosque ceased to function and resumed its activity only in 1989 .
