History and Description
In 1912, with the laying of the first stone in the foundation of the new steel mill in Brandenburg an der Havel , the construction of a new residential quarter began. By 1919, there were 24 houses in it, and in the spring of 1920, 146 new apartments were ready to be occupied by factory workers. At that time, the local Catholic community did not have its own church and held divine services in factory premises twice a week. The new church, built on donations from parishioners, was consecrated by Bishop Nikolaus Bares in 1934 - Bernard of Clairvaux was chosen as its patron. As a result, a small church was used for worship between 1934 and 2014: on August 30, 2014, the last Mass was held in its building. In 2015, the St. Bernhard Gemeinschaftskirche Brandenburg ”, which was planning to acquire the building.
The Church of St. Bernard has a simple structure of a plastered building; it adjoins a row of houses, forming their western end. The west tower portal of the church is decorated with clinker brick masonry. Rizalit has been added to the construction of the facade of the tower. The cross of the temple is attached to its western pediment ; the nave is covered with a pitched roof. Six small rectangular windows are installed on the north and south sides. The interior of the church is simple: smooth white plastered walls and a wooden altar without decorations. To the left of the altar is a wooden image of the Virgin , and to the right is a sculpture of St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Stained-glass windows were made in 1948 according to the project of the artist Werner Kleinschmidt ( German: Werner Kleinschmidt ). Between the windows is located the "Way of the Cross." Due to the fact that the church was used by the Russian Orthodox community, there were several icons in the building. To the right of the entrance was a small organ , and behind it - a tablet with the names of parishioners who died during World War II .
