Like all eight Guinea-Bissau protected areas, Cantanes National Park is managed by the Instituto da Biodiversidade e das Áreas Protegidas (IBAP) State Scientific Institute. The rainforests of Cantanes are the only intact jungle of this country of West Africa. The region where the national park is located is known for heavy rainfall, on average annually from 2,500 to 3,000 mm of rain falls here.

Geography
Cantanes National Park is located in the Tombali region, in the southwest of Guinea-Bissau. In the east, the reserve border coincides with the border of neighboring Guinea. The distance to the capital of the country, Bissau , which lies to the north, is 258 kilometers, with the last 60 of them being on a dirt road.
On the territory of the National Park, about 20 thousand people live in 13 large villages belonging to the Balant, Nalu, Fulbe, Susso and other nationalities, many of which also have resettlement areas in neighboring Guinea. In addition to cattle breeders, fulbe, the rest of the nationalities are engaged in agriculture (rice cultivation) and in forestry.
History
For the first time, security measures in Cantanes were carried out in 1980. In 1997, laws were passed in the country that determined the position and status of national parks in Guinea-Bissau. In 2004, the management of the territories of protected natural territories and reserves under the jurisdiction of the newly created Instituto da Biodiversidade e das Áreas Protegidas (IBAP) was created .
In 2007, the Cantánez protected area receives the status of the Natural Park ( Parque Natural de Cantanhez ), in 2011 it rises to the position of the “National Park”.
Flora and Fauna
The vegetation is represented by mangroves of the humid jungle. Many different types of palm trees, as well as leguminous, anisophyllous and chrysobalanic plants.
The national park is known for its wildlife . According to the Government of Guinea-Bissau, more than 30 species of mammals, more than 40 species of fish, numerous species of birds, reptiles and insects live in the park. Of great importance for the preservation of animal populations are the “corridors” created here. connecting Cantanes with the territory of Guinea, as well as with the natural park Lagoas y Kufada. Using these “corridors”, animals endangered, for example, elephants, enter the territory of the National Park.
Cantanes National Park stands out for its population of western chimpanzees . In 2011, 287 of their nests were counted here, of which 92% were on the crowns of oil palm trees. There is also an African buffalo , horse antelope , various species of colobus , including royal , duker-antelopes , Guinean baboon , warthogs and some species of thickbodies . The park has a large number of migratory birds, including pelicans .
