Museum History

The "Republican Museum of Kazakh Folk Musical Instruments of the Kazakh SSR" was organized in 1980 by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR of August 1, 1980. The museum opened on April 24, 1981. In the funds of the new museum, there were over 400 storage units and over 40 types and varieties of Kazakh folk musical instruments [1] [2] . The original place where the museum was located was the historic two-story building of the former house of the aksakal Seydalin , at 99 Panfilov Street, corner Zhibek Zholy.

In order to popularize folk musical culture in 1981, the folklore-ethnographic ensemble Sazgen was created at the museum.

In 1983, the museum moved to the building of the former House of Officer Assembly on Zenkova 24, where it is located today [3] .

On March 11, 1990, the government of the Kazakh SSR decided to give the museum the name of Ykhylas Dukenuly , the Kazakh folk composer kyusha , kobyzist, one of the founders of the kobyz school.

In 2012, the "Republican Museum of Kazakh Folk Musical Instruments named after Ykylas" was transferred from the republican property and the administration of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the communal property of the Akimat of Almaty. After that, the Department of Culture of the Akimat renamed the museum, the words “Republican” and “Kazakh” disappeared from the name.

In 2012-2013, the museum underwent a major reconstruction, instead of the required restoration of buildings that are architectural monuments [4] . During the reconstruction, the internal historical interior of the building was completely changed and lost.

The three-axis space-planning solution highlighted on the main facade by risalits. The central risalit is accented by a two-story tented completion, with elegantly carved platbands of dormer windows. The upper tier is through, with a four-pitched roof covering, supported by carved columns. Lateral risalits have a pitched metal roof.
