Labor

After graduating from MEPhI, he was hired by the Institute of Nuclear Physics , where he went from an engineer to a leading researcher. In 1990, he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, in 2009 he successfully defended his thesis for the degree of doctor of physical and mathematical sciences. From 1992 to 1994 worked at the invitation of the University of Illinois (USA) as a research physicist, conducted in-reactor research on the conversion of nuclear energy into optical radiation energy. In particular, he first obtained the direct conversion of nuclear energy into the energy of coherent optical radiation at atomic xenon transitions in the core of the TRIGA nuclear reactor. Since 1995, participated in the creation of KK Interconnect, since 1996 - Vice President, President of KK Interconnect, a joint venture created by the National Nuclear Center and the US Defense Enterprise Fund under the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Conversion of the Former Semipalatinsk nuclear test site . Since May 2009 - First Deputy General Director of the National Nuclear Center. Since 2013, Erlan Gadletovich has been holding the post of General Director of the RSE “ National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan ”, and also currently manages the Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology branch of the RSE NNC RK.

Key Scientific Achievements

Erlan Batyrbekov is a recognized scientist in the field of reactor experiments, the conversion of nuclear energy into optical radiation, and the safety of nuclear energy. He has experience in research nuclear reactors IVG.1M, IGR (NNC RK), VVR-K (INP), TRIGA (University of Illinois, USA) and IRT MEPhI (Moscow). Expert on conversion and rehabilitation of the Semipalatinsk test site (SIP).

Nuclear-pumped lasers

Under the leadership of E.G. Batyrbekov, scientific research on the conversion of nuclear energy into the energy of light coherent and incoherent optical radiation, the kinetics of low-temperature nuclear-excited plasma, has begun and is being successfully conducted at the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Based on the results of these studies, E. G. Batyrbekov was the first to propose the concept of intra-reactor nuclear-optical converters of the energy of nuclear reactions into coherent (laser) and incoherent optical radiation, capable of working with both direct and combined nuclear pumps. The possibility of creating such lasers based on atomic xenon transitions has been experimentally demonstrated for the first time. Plasma-chemical computer models of the kinetics of low-temperature nuclear-excited plasma of a number of active media of nuclear-pumped lasers at atomic transitions of inert gases and metal vapors have been created.

Radioecology

In the field of radioecology, with his direct participation in the Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology of the NNC RK, a unique infrastructure and hardware and methodological base have been created, which allows to determine a wide range of artificial and natural radionuclides in any environmental objects in mass volume, as well as to conduct large-scale field studies. Work has begun and successfully completed to identify and characterize areas of the Experimental Field site of the Semipalatinsk test site containing abnormally high concentrations of the most dangerous radionuclides - transuranic elements. The technologies for the elimination of identified especially dangerous areas developed with his participation were successfully applied, which allowed for their full remediation.

Use of SIP land

On his initiative, a strategy was developed to maximize the use of land for self-supporting insulated lands. For the first time, a project was successfully implemented to create an Industrial Waste Landfill for the Kazzinc LLP enterprise at the Balapan site of the Semipalatinsk test site, as a result of which the lands on which underground nuclear explosions were carried out and which were not supposed to be used now already bring real benefits to the state .

Nuclear Safety Research

With his direct participation, unique scientific research on the safety of nuclear energy was successfully carried out, the results of which allowed NNC RK to advance to the forefront in the field of experimental modeling of accidents at nuclear power plants with core melting.

Fukushima Project

As part of the Fukushima project, the accident at the Fukushima-1 NPP was experimentally modeled for the first time. For the first time, a core melt (corium) was obtained, whose composition was similar to the core melt in the emergency reactor of the Fukushima-1 NPP, its chemical and physical properties were studied, on the basis of which recommendations were developed for the disposal of corium from the emergency reactor.

CORMIT Project

Within the framework of the CORMIT project, for the first time, studies were conducted on the interaction of various heat-resistant materials with core melt in order to search for “sacrificial” materials for application to specially designed core melt traps.

EAGLE Project

Within the framework of the EAGLE project, research is being conducted into the behavior of fast-assembly fuel assemblies in a severe accident with core destruction.

ASTRID Project

In NNC RK, work has begun on the experimental justification of the design of the core of the ASTRID Generation IV fast-neutron reactor designed in France, which, having the properties of the core self-defense, will greatly mitigate the consequences of a severe accident.

Conversion of research reactors NNC RK

Work has begun on the conversion of research reactors IGR and IVG.1M. Unique calculations have been performed that show the theoretical possibility of the operation of the research reactors IGR and IVG.1M on low enriched uranium (19.75% U-235).

Scientific articles and reports at international scientific conferences

Batyrbekov E.G. is a co-author of more than 150 scientific articles and reports at international scientific conferences, of which 22 are published in international rating publications included in the Thomson Reuters (Web of Science) International Database.

Monographs

He is the author of several monographs, one of which was published in the three-volume edition "Conducting a set of scientific, technical and engineering works to bring the former Semipalatinsk test site into a safe state" with the participation of the Head of State, Leader of the Nation N. A. Nazarbayev.

Copyrights and patents

He has seven copyright certificates and innovative patents for inventions and utility models.
