History
The market square in Rothenburg is the focus of business activity. It organizes a weekly market, city tours, demonstrates traditional shepherd's dance, and fireworks are launched during the celebration of the city festival. The Town Hall is located on the Market Square, the steps of which have become a meeting place for local residents and tourists [1] . In some sources, the Market Square is referred to as the Town Hall Square, apparently due to the location of the city hall on it [2] .
Two half-timbered houses are located at the intersection of Kuznechnaya Street in the Market Square, one of them was the house of the burgomaster Jagstheimer, the second was a meat workshop with a dance hall [2] . Next to the town hall in the square, the pink building of the Lord Counselors Tavern was built [3] .

The market square is surrounded by patrician houses. From this place you can see how every hour, starting from 10 a.m. and ending at 10 p.m., the clock on the Counselor’s Tavern (German: Ratstrinkstube ) shows a scene from the city legend about the “Master's Throat” of the burgomaster Nush. There is a belief according to which the former burgomaster saved the city from destruction that could be caused by the troops of imperial general Tilly. He won his bet by drinking 3 ¼ liters of Franconian wine in October 1631. At that time, women and children of Rothenburg gathered in the same Market Square and asked the general not to destroy their city [1] .
In 1632, the army of the King of Sweden, Gustav Adolf , stopped at the Market Square, and the king himself slept in the town hall [1] .
In June 1525, Margrave Casimir of Brandenburg-Kulmbahsky executed 17 leaders of a peasant uprising on the Market Square [1] .
In the evening, a ranger appears on the Market Square with a lantern that tells tourists and residents of the city legends and various stories, and at the same time makes a tour of the territory [4] .
On the Market Square are located Ratstrinkstube (German: Ratstrinkstube ) - in the old days a tavern for members of the city council, now it houses the Tourist Information Center. In the southern part of the square, the George Well was built - another city attraction. The depth of the well is 8 meters, capacity - 100,000 liters. This is the largest well in the city. Behind Georg’s well is the Hofbronnengasse lane [5] .
From the Market Square, city tours with a guide will start. They are held from April 1 to October 31, and during the Christmas fairs from 11 am to 2 pm in German, excursions in English begin at 2 pm. From April 1 to December 30, you can go on tours with a night watchman. The tour takes place at 8 pm in English, and at 21:30 in German [5] .
