Biography
Born in the family of hairdresser Ludwig Trube and a native of Nizhny Novgorod Anna Ivanovna (maiden name - Kotelnikova). Father is a Latvian by nationality, mother before the revolution belonged to the philistine estate.
In 1940-1944, Leo studied at the Faculty of Geography at the Gorky State Pedagogical Institute. After graduating with honors, from 1944 until the end of his days he taught at the alma mater. Lev Ludwigovich was the first among graduates of the Faculty of Geography to defend his dissertation (1951, Moscow State University). Doctoral dissertation defended in 1988.
He was buried in Nizhny Novgorod, at the Maryina Roscha cemetery.
- The science
The main interests of L. L. Trube lay in the fields of physical geography, population geography, and toponymy. He has published 12 books and 350 articles. Among the books: “Our Cities” (1954), “Dictionary of Local Geographic Terms” (1959, co-authored with V. G. Trube), “Gorky Region. Nature and population ”(1968, co-authored with A. F. Shubin),“ Geography of the Gorky region ”(1978),“ Geography of the city of Gorky ”(1971),“ Population of the city of Gorky ”(1982 )
L. L. Trube is the founder of the study of Nizhny Novgorod toponymy and onomastics. The most significant book by L. L. Trube on toponymy is “How did the geographical names of the Gorky region arise” (Gorky, 1962). By genre, it is a toponymic dictionary containing over 400 root words related to the names of approximately 1000 settlements and 100 rivers, as well as a number of other geographical objects, in particular localities. This also includes a number of names relating to the toponymy of the city of Gorky.
- Heritage Assessment
On the occasion of the 80th birthday of L. L. Trube, a book composed of fifty toponymic notes by L. L. Trube was published at the Stolniy Grad Moscow publishing house. It is called "Landmarks of the Nizhny Novgorod".
On the website of NGPU them. Kozma Minin noted that L. L. Trube is one of the most cited foreign geographic scientists abroad. He was noted among the largest Soviet urbanists in the work of famous French geographers J. Bozhe-Garnier and J. Chabot, “Essays on the Geography of Cities” (1967).
