Biography

Giseltrud is known from several medieval historical sources : the life of St. Anselm of Nonantola and three charters written in the XI century (two of them are considered to be unreliable) [1] [2] .

The origin of Giseltrude is reported in the life of Anselm of Nonantol, in which she is called the sister of this saint. In the charters dated 797 and 820, a certain Adoin, who owned property in Verona and Vicenza , is called Anselm’s brother and son of Vechtari. Probably this Wehtari could be a descendant of the Friulian Duke of the same name . The possibility does not exclude the possibility that on the maternal side Anselm and Giseltrud were related by kinship with the family of the Langobard king Liutprand . All these facts make it possible to attribute the Giseltrude family to the upper strata of the Lombard nobility [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] .

Nothing is known about when and under what circumstances Giseltrud became the wife of Aistulf. This probably happened when he was the Duke of Friul. The only modern source in Giseltrude is the donation charter, given between 749 and 751 years by Queen Lupitsin for the monastery of San Gimignano. In this document, Giseltrude is mentioned as the wife of Aistulf and the queen, famous for her origin and piety ( lat. "Gloriosissima el precellentissima Giseltruda regina, dilecta coniunx nostra" ). Giseltrud as a philanthropist of the Nonantol Monastery is mentioned in the life of his abbot Anselm [1] [2] [9] . However, the opinion of the queen as a co-founder of Fanano Abbey is most likely erroneous [4] .

Other evidence of Giseltrud has not been preserved [1] . Nothing is known about any children of King Aistulf and Giseltrud [1] [9] [10] .
