History

On June 3, 1952, the first eight members established the Hot Club Iserlohn jazz club in Iserlohn, which joined the German Jazz Federation the following year. In addition to musical evenings, lectures were also held at the club. In 1955, the city provided the club with a new building: a vaulted cellar in the building, which today houses the city museum . Two years later, the “jazz basement” moved from the city center to the basement of the former factory building on Friedrichstraße Street - since then the club got its modern name, “Henkelmann” [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] .

Under the direction of a number of local musicians, a jazz big band gathered several times at the club, who was invited to regional festivals, performed in Dortmund, and in 1961 participated in the German national jazz festival. Several times in the club premises there were recordings of performances for radio and television, as well as recording of several albums. In the following years, a number of well-known musicians performed at the club, including Gary Burton , Jones Alvin , Steve Swallow , Joe Zawinula , Sun Ra , John Scofield and Maynard Ferguson . After a fire in the club during a concert in June 1988, the club had to look for a new place. In 1990, Henkelmann reopened in its old place.
