History
St. Wolfgang Church is located outside the Klingentor Gate. It is also called the church of the shepherds of sheep. The building was built in the late Gothic style. The construction period lasted from 1475 to 1493. The builder was the brotherhood of sheep shepherds [3] , which was formed because the wool trade and sheep farming was a very important type of economic activity during the Middle Ages in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. St. Wolfgang's Church is a fortified church with casemates and a parapet wall with loopholes [3] . Near the church there is an extension, in which there is a museum of shepherd's dance [2] . Also nearby is an arch through which lies the path to the Tauber River [3] .
In this church, shepherds worshiped St. Wolfgang, who patronized the herds. The church has survived to our time unchanged. From the outside of the gate, it looks like a fortification with thick walls and embrasures, and inside it is a church that contains late Gothic art patterns and three beautiful altars. Altar of St. Wolfgang is a high altar that contains wooden figures of St. Sebastian, St. Rochus and St. Wolfgang. It also contains scenes from the legend of Wolfgang. The altar of St. Wendelin contains images of St. Wendelin, St. Nicholas, St. Emperor Henry II and St. Martin [4] .
The second name - “Shepherd’s Church” - received the church of St. Wolfgang because members of the brotherhood of shepherds annually arranged thanksgiving on Tuesday after St. Bartholomew’s day. After the service, the shepherds went to the “Lamb Inn”, which was located on the market, to dance and eat there. The custom of shepherd's dance appeared in 1911 and since then it has been performed several times a year [4] .
Next to the St. Wolfgang Church is the Klingenturm Tower [3] .
In 1986, an exhibition of shepherd dances was opened at the museum of St. Wolfgang in the museum, on which objects that were associated with shepherd dancing and sheep breeding in the city were exhibited for public viewing [3] .
Entrance to the museum is free only for children under 6 years old, an adult ticket costs 1.50 euros, for children over 6 years old - 0.50 euros [4] .
The church and museum are located at 1 Klingentorbastei Street [1] .
