History

The Medieval Criminal Law Museum is located in a house that was built between 1393 and 1410, as well as the neighboring Church of St. John. In 1718, this building was slightly modified and it now showed baroque elements. In the XIX century, it housed the Royal Administration of the Bavarian District. In 1919, it became the seat of the administration in the district of Rothenburg [3] .

The museum’s collection began to be created on the basis of a small private collection that belonged to the publisher and archivist Karl Albrecht from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. This collection was located in the Rothenburg Torture Chamber in the tower of the castle hotel on Klostergass. Gradually, the artists Ernst Paul Hinkeldi and Martha Hinkeldi-Wittke began to work on the creation of the museum. In the 1950s, their son Christopher and his wife Hildegard continued to collect the collection, including in the exhibition area and the basement of a medieval castle. The increase in the collection required more space, so the museum moved to another house in 1977 [3] . This house in 1972 ceased to be an administrative building, and it was acquired by the family of the founder of the museum. Restoration work was carried out in the building, a lot was converted [3] .

At the end of 1993, the museum’s founder family donated the main museum building and some parts of the collection to the Public Law Foundation, which is headquartered in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. When the founder of the museum, Christoph Hinkeldi, died, Dr. Karl-Heinz Schneider became the director of the museum. In the period from 1994 to 1996, the house was being renovated, from 1997 it began to be used for exhibitions. Since June 2013, Dr. Marcus Hirte became the head of the Museum of Medieval Crime [3] .

The museum has about 50 thousand exhibits that reflect the development of German and European jurisprudence. They also contain instruments of torture, information materials, documents, shameful masks and decks [1] .

The museum exposition covers an area of 2500 square meters [1] .
