Biography

The parents of Juan, one of eight children, are middle class: father is an airline pilot, mother is a teacher. One grandfather was a sergeant of the , the other was a captain of the Venezuelan Navy [2] .

in 2000, Guaido graduated from high school [3] , in 2007 received an industrial engineer diploma from the Catholic University of Andres Bello. Then he studied at George Washington University .

According to his colleagues, the political views of Guaido were affected by the natural disaster in Vargas , as a result of which his family was temporarily left homeless: the then government of Hugo Chavez gave an ineffective response to the disaster [4] .

The beginning of political activity

Guaido took part in the student political movement [5] . Together with other political figures, he became the founder of the party " Narodnaya Volya " in 2009 [6] .

In the parliamentary elections in 2010, Guaido was elected a reserve federal deputy (a reserve deputy takes a seat in parliament in the event of the death or resignation of a colleague) [7] , in 2015, he was elected to the National Assembly [8] .

On January 5, 2019, he was elected speaker of the Venezuelan parliament .

Engaging in the 2019 political crisis

On January 11, 2019, Guaido stated that the constitution allows him to fulfill the powers of the head of state [9] .

On January 13, 2019, Guaido was detained by the Venezuelan intelligence agency SEBIN , but was soon released [10] .

At a rally on January 23, he declared himself acting president of Venezuela and took the oath. A few hours later, the United States in the person of President Donald Trump recognized him as head of state [11] . In total, more than 50 countries recognized Juan Guaido as the legal leader of Venezuela [12] .

The Supreme Court of Venezuela forbade Juan Guaidó to leave the country and froze assets [13] . Despite the ban, Guaidó left the country, toured Latin America to recognize him as head of state (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Paraguay) and then returned to Venezuela [14] . In early April 2019, the National Constituent Assembly of Venezuela , according to a decision of the Supreme Court of Venezuela, deprived Guaido of parliamentary immunity [15] .
