Monotype is a nomenklatura situation in which only one taxon of a lower rank belongs to a taxon of a higher rank or (in relation to taxons of a group of a species ) the description is based on a single type specimen . For example, if a genus includes only one species, such a genus is called “monotypic” or “monotypic” (in zoology the first term is usually used, in botany the second one is used [1] ).
Monotype simplifies the designation of nomenclature types during the systematic processing of groups of animals and plants in which types were not identified by previous authors.
Monotype taxon ( lat. Taxon monotypicum ) is a taxon with only one directly hierarchically subordinate taxon [2] .
