Juan Antonio Ferreira Resende Alves (born December 5, 1952 in Albergaria-a-Velha ) is a Portuguese footballer and football coach. He currently leads the Portuguese club " Academica ".
Juan Alves played as an attacking midfielder, he was considered one of the best Portuguese football players of his generation and received the nickname "Black Gloves", which he wore during the game [2] .
He spent most of his career at Benfica and Boavista , and also coached the last club three times.
Player career
Club career
Alves began to play football in the youth team “ Sanjuanense ”. In 1969, representatives of Benfica noticed him. His first professional team was Varzin , where he performed on loan in the 1972/73 season. He made his debut in the Premier League as part of Montijo [3] .
Before the 1974/75 season, Alves moved to Boavista, where he first showed his talent by winning two Portuguese cups in a row. There he was noticed by scouts of the Spanish Salamanca , where he played two more years. Then he returned to Benfica [4] , and a year later moved to Paris Saint-Germain [5] .
Unable to impress in France , Alves returned to Estadio da Lush , where he played for the next three seasons [6] . During this time, he made two “doubles” (1981 and 1983), and also played in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup final , where his team lost to Anderlecht from Belgium with a total score of 2: 1 [2] . He then rejoined Boavista [7] , ending his career in the 1984/85 season at the age of 32. As a result, he became the coach of this team [3] .
International career
Alves played 36 matches for Portugal , scoring three goals. His debut took place on November 13, 1974 in a friendly match with the Swiss national team , his team lost with a score of 0: 3. He spent his last match on April 27, 1983 as part of the selection for Euro 1984 , Portugal was defeated with a score of 0: 5 by the Soviet Union [8] .
Coaching career
After the player’s career ended, Alves became a coach, was appointed to the post of Boavista’s mentor three times. In 1988, he led the Estrel Amador and led the team to a historic triumph in the 1990 Portuguese Cup [9] . In 1996, he became at the helm of “Salamanca”, but spent only two matches [10] [3] .
In 2007, he returned to Benfica, becoming the team's coach until the age of 18. Two years later, he returned to professional football, signing a contract with the Swiss Servette and achieving promotion to the Super League in the second season [11] [3] .
November 28, 2011, after relegation from the Swiss Cup from Bil Bienne (defeat 0: 3 away), Alves was fired [12] . However, due to the poor results of his successor, and after the arrival of the new owner Hugh Quennek in April 2012, Alves was reinstated as a trainer [13] . In the last five games, campaign results have improved: four wins and one draw, including a 2: 1 victory over the future champion, Basel . Ultimately, the team qualified for the Europa League [14] [11] .
On October 9, 2018, after six years outside of football, Alves became the coach of the “Academics” from the Second League [15] .
