National Conservatory (Argentina)

The Higher National Conservatory named after Carlos Lopez Bucardo ( Spanish: Conservatorio Nacional Superior de Música ) - the highest musical educational institution, operating in Buenos Aires in 1924-1999.

Founded with the support of Argentinean President Marcelo de Alvear and his wife Rechina Pacini (former opera singer) as the National Conservatory of Music and Recitation ( Spanish: Conservatorio Nacional de Música y Declamación ); composer Carlos Lopez Bucardo became one of its founders and the first director, and after his death (1948) the conservatory was given his name. The conservatory included the school of opera and stage art operating at the Kolon Opera House, and initially the conservatory worked in the theater. In 1928, a ballet department was opened in the conservatory, headed by Elena Smirnova (since 1950 the independent National Dance School). In 1930-1941 the conservatory was located in the building of the Cervantes National Theater , then it changed several more rooms until in 1982 it finally settled in its current building. In 1958, theatrical specialties were allocated to the National School of Theater. In 1989, the National School of Music for Primary Music Education was allocated from the conservatory, previously working with pupils and students of all ages and stages of study, and in 1995, the Buenos Aires City Conservatory for secondary music education. In 1999, it became part of the National University of Art .
