Carolina Matilda Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (January 25, 1860 - February 20, 1932) is the second daughter of Prince Frederick VIII of Schleswig-Holstein and Princess Adelheida of Hohenlohe-Langenburg .

Life

The elder sister of Carolina Matilda, Augusta Victoria , was Empress of the German Empire and Queen of Prussia as the wife of Emperor Wilhelm II . Carolina Matilda was the Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg , and later the Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein as the wife of Friedrich Ferdinand . Carolina's maternal grandmother, Princess Theodora of Leningens , was Queen Victoria’s uterine sister.

On March 19, 1885 in Przemkow, Carolina Matilda married Friedrich Ferdinand , the eldest son of Prince Friedrich Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg and Princess Adelaide Schaumburg-Lipp . He was also the nephew of King Christian IX of Denmark.

After the overthrow of the Hohenzollern dynasty at the end of World War I , Carolina Matilda and her family lived a solitary life, rarely leaving the Grünholz castle [2] .

Carolina Matilda died in her castle on February 20, 1932 at the age of 72. A few years before, she had an attack of heart failure, and she never fully recovered. Of the whole family, only the husband was with her when she was dying [2] .

Children

Carolina Matilda had six children:

  • Victoria Adelaide (1885-1970) - the wife of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha Carl Edward , had five children with him;
  • Alexandra Victoria (1887-1957) - wife of Prince of Prussia Augustus Wilhelm , had an only son with him;
  • Elena Adelaide (1888-1962) - the wife of Prince Harald of Denmark, had five children with him;
  • Adelheida (1889-1964) - the wife of Prince Solms-Barutsky Friedrich, had five children;
  • Wilhelm Friedrich (1891-1965) - the titular Duke of Schleswig-Holstein in 1934-1965, was married to Maria Melita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg , had four children with her;
  • Carolina Matilda (1894-1972) - the wife of Count of Solms-Barut Hans, had three children with him.
