Biography
- Born October 17, 1923 in a large peasant family in the village of Gorbunovka .
- In 1941 he graduated from high school.
- Since 1942, in labor, and from 1943 - in the army. He participated in the battles for the liberation of Ukraine . He fought in the tank forces in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Germany, stormed Berlin and Prague.
- In January 1946, he entered the position of laboratory assistant at the Barnaul Pedagogical Institute. He completed his studies at the historical department of the correspondence department.
- In 1953–1955 history teacher in the seven-year school number 13 in Barnaul.
- From October 1955 to August 1963, senior inspector for museums and the protection of cultural monuments in the culture department of the Altai Territory Executive Committee.
- Since 1963 - Senior Lecturer at the Barnaul Pedagogical Institute.
- In 1970 - Associate Professor, 1976–2002. - Head of the department.

Scientific achievements
- The novice archaeologist conducted the first independent excavations in 1951 near the village of Yin in the Pavlovsky (now Shelabolikhinsky) district of the Altai Territory. During the archaeological expedition, four barrows of the Srostkin culture were uncovered.
- For thirty years, Umansky annually participated in scientific archaeological research on the study of ancient monuments of the region.
- The discoveries made with the direct participation of the archaeologist include the necropolis of the Andronovo culture (Kytmanovo, Nizhnyaya Suetka, Stepnoy Chumysh, and others), late Bronze Age (Novoilinka, Ilyinka, Plotinnaya, Novotroitskoye), early iron (the Mudumye tract, Kamen II, Maslyakha, Novotroitsky tract). and ancient Türkic time (Zaitsevo, Gryaznovo, Yin and others).
- The State Hermitage keeps things of a unique burial of the “great migration of peoples” era from Tugozvonovo , which were saved for science thanks to the efforts of A. P. Umansky, as well as a collection (more than 110 items) of jewelry found in the graves of Andronovo culture ( Kytmanovo ) and in the mounds of the early Iron Age (ur. Meditation). [2]
- The Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences contains stone products from Ollinki (within the city of Gorno-Altaisk), which were produced in antiquity in the 1970s. a real sensation in the scientific world. - A. P. Umansky published more than 300 scientific, popular science and methodical works, including 6 monographs on various problems of archeology, history and ethnography of Siberia and Altai.
- On the basis of new documentary archival materials, he revealed the economic and social structure of the Teleut society, its interrelations with the Russian state, the Dzungarian khanate and other ethno-political formations of Southern Siberia and Mongolia. [five]
Awards
- For his courage during the Great Patriotic War, A. P. Umansky was awarded two Orders of the Patriotic War of the second degree, medals "For Courage", "For the Capture of Berlin", "For the Liberation of Prague", an honorary badge "Excellent Tankist", 17 medals and signs the differences.
- For success in scientific and pedagogical activity, he was awarded the title "Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation" (1994).
- On the initiative of teachers of the Belarusian State Pedagogical University on June 13, 2006, a meeting of the toponymic commission of the city of Barnaul unanimously decided to establish a memorial plaque "Professor A.P. Umansky lived here for more than 40 years" on the building on ul. Proletarskaya, 67, the opening of which took place on October 17, 2006. [6]
