Biography

He studied philosophy and law. Later he was a lawyer in Lyon , then moved to Paris and became famous here after speaking at the famous Beaumarchais trial with the banker Kornmann, who started a lawsuit against his own wife, accusing her of infidelity (marital infidelity at that time was a criminal offense). Beaumarchais represented Madame Kornmann at the trial and brilliantly won the trial, despite the fact that the lawyer Bergass , representing the interests of her husband, was a very strong opponent.

He served as a lawyer in the Paris Parliament. In 1781, he became a pupil and follower of Franz Mesmer and in 1784 published a work on the systematization of Mesmerism , entitled "Considérations sur le magnetisme animal". Bergasse helped Mesmer establish the Paris Harmony Society [4] .

During the French Revolution, N. Bergasse was elected representative of the city of Lune in the assembly of the General States from the third estate . In 1789 he became a deputy of the National Assembly .

Politician. He represented the Middle Party (the initial center), which was formed by monarchists who were loyal to the idea of royal power, but who wanted, at the same time, reform and constitution, with a separation of powers and a representation of two houses ( Malue , Mounier , Lally-Tolandal , Bergass , Clermont -Tonner et al.). They established a club of "impartial" or "monarchical", closed in early 1791 .

Subsequently refused the oath of the new constitution and resigned. Since that time, he devoted himself exclusively to journalistic activities and wrote several brochures in which he condemned the activities of the National Assembly .

During the French Revolution, he expressed a particular political and constitutional idea, inspired by the British and American models, and developed the theory of sovereignty of the universal mind.

Not being a supporter of an absolute monarchy , N. Bergasse was nevertheless close in his political views to the party of the court.

When the Tuileries Palace was taken (August 10, 1792), the rebels found there many of his letters to the king and a draft constitution, and N. Bergasse was arrested. But Robespierre's death saved him from the guillotine .

Since that time N. Bergasse has departed from active politics and devoted himself to philosophical works.

One of the figures of the Age of Enlightenment . Met with Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau .

In 1830, King Charles X appointed him a member of the Council of State .

After the restoration, Bourbonov published an Essay on the Law and an Essay on Property, as a result of which he had problems with the new authorities.
