In the National Park there are three protected areas of the Natura 2000 network (GR2130007, GR2110002 and GR2130013). Of these, the “Mount Lakmos (Peristeri)” (GR2130007) [4] and “Atamanika (Neraida) Mountains” (GR2110002) [5] sections are fully included in the National Park, and the “Wide Atamanika (Neraida) Mountains” section (GR2130013) [6] - most of the territory [3] .
Also in the park there are two important areas for birds - “Atamanika Mountains (Dzumerka)” [7] and “Mount Peristeri” [8] , five reserves [3] :
- Arachtos Gorge with an area of 2733 ha
- Oriental Zumerka with an area of 1,430 hectares
- Theodorian 413 hectares
- Vurgarels with an area of 1000 hectares
- Kutsuyo-Zakuta-Mnimata with an area of 1927.8 ha
There are five traditional settlements in the park: , , , and [3] .
Also in the park there are special natural landscapes “Arakhtos Gorge” (AT3011038) [9] and “Gorge of the Khrusias, Sirakon, Kalarite River” (AT3010045) [10] , numerous cultural monuments ( classical , Byzantine and later periods, 139 total) [3] .
Complex terrain, elevation differences (144-2429 m) and water bodies (Aheloos, Arachtos, , Chrusias, Melisuriotikos ( Μελισσουργιώτικος ), Matsukyotikos ( Ματσουκιώτικος ) create a diversity of habitats). Rare and endemic plant species are found [1] . 17 habitat types and 30 types and subtypes of aquatic habitats have been recorded. There are many rare and protected species of mammals, such as otter , brown bear , chamois . The region is especially important for bird populations; hundreds of species of invertebrates, fish, amphibians, and reptiles have also been recorded [2] [3] .
The National Park is a huge ethnographic open-air museum that harmoniously combines natural and man-made environments. Stone bridges, cultural monuments, traditional settlements, works of people's hands are harmoniously combined with beautiful natural landscapes, steep mountains (Strongula, , and Peristeri), gorges, caves, ravines and waterfalls [1] . This combination makes the area unique [2] [3] .
