On January 15, 1920, contracting typhoid, his father died in Chelyabinsk , and the family returned to Petrograd.

In his school years, Sergey became interested in aircraft modeling. He studied at the university in the mathematical specialty, but in the 3rd year he switched to hydroaeromechanics. After graduating from university in 1939, he entered graduate school to professor I. A. Kibel .

Since the beginning of World War II he served in the air forces of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet, the navigator of the crew for the distillation of aircraft from the United States to the USSR [1] , carried out air cover of naval convoys from the air [2] . He joined the Communist Party.

During military service he participated in the work of a research institute, created and tested in a combat situation new bombing tables for naval targets, which were then adopted in naval aviation (1943) [3] . In 1946, while still in the army, he defended his thesis [4] .

Demobilized, resumed work at Leningrad University. In 1959 he defended his doctoral dissertation. L.I. Sedov ranked Wallander among his students.

In 1950 he was awarded the title of professor, received the first prize for the best scientific work in the competition of university works. From academician V.I. Smirnov, he took over the chair of the Department of Hydroaeromechanics, and in 1957, he became director of the Research Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of Leningrad State University. From 1965 to 1973 - Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Leningrad State University .

He died of a stroke [5] .

Scientific Interests

The main works relate to fluid dynamics, lattice theory, the theory of a wing in a supersonic flow, the law of hypersonic similarity, and the aerodynamics of rarefied gases. He gave new solutions to some partial differential equations, integral equations, functional equations.

Estimates of Contemporaries

“It was a romantic from science. He did not sit in libraries, did not pore over literature, did not systematize the work of his predecessors. Having taken up the task, he delved into it so much that he could talk about it as about something of his own, deeply experienced. And if the problem allowed a simple solution, he accepted it and tastefully opened it to people. ” [5]
